Supreme Court concerned over rising helicopter crashes in Kedarnath

The Supreme Court has expressed serious concern over the increasing number of helicopter crashes in Kedarnath, calling it a “disturbing pattern” that needs urgent attention. The observation came while hearing a petition related to the safety of pilgrims and aviation operations in the region.

The bench noted that the rising frequency of such incidents raises questions about the safety measures followed by helicopter operators and the monitoring mechanisms in place. It pointed out that Kedarnath’s challenging terrain and unpredictable weather demand the highest level of operational vigilance.

The court has sought a detailed report from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on the safety protocols currently enforced for flights to Kedarnath. It also stressed the need for strict adherence to guidelines, regular maintenance checks, and experienced pilots familiar with the region’s flying conditions.

In recent years, multiple accidents have claimed lives and raised alarm among both authorities and the public. The Supreme Court’s intervention is expected to prompt a comprehensive review of helicopter services in the area to ensure the safety of pilgrims and crew members.
