Ananya Lohia , Mumbai - The makers of Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta's much-awaited period drama have officially renamed the film Batwara 1947, which was previously announced as Lahore 1947. Along with the title change, the team also unveiled the film's first motion poster and confirmed its theatrical release on August 14, 2026.
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan, the film is set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947. The motion poster offers a glimpse into the turmoil, violence and emotional upheaval that marked one of the most significant chapters in the history of the Indian subcontinent. The poster features Sunny Deol at the centre holding a blazing torch, while another visual shows him and Shabana Azmi separated by the Partition. Preity Zinta, a young girl and Karan Deol are also seen in the poster, hinting at the emotional and human stories woven into the narrative.
According to reports, the title rights for Batwara were acquired from the family of late producer Salim Akhtar, who had produced the 1989 film of the same name. Aamir Khan reportedly secured the rights after meeting the family personally. The film marks Rajkumar Santoshi's reunion with Aamir Khan after Andaz Apna Apna and with Sunny Deol after successful collaborations such as Ghayal and Damini. The cast also includes Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh in key roles.
Reportedly based on Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya O Jamyai Ni, the story revolves around a Muslim family that migrates from Lucknow to Lahore during Partition and is allotted a haveli vacated by a Hindu family. The situation takes a dramatic turn when they discover that the original occupants are still living there and refuse to leave. With music by A. R. Rahman and lyrics by Javed Akhtar, Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release in theatres on August 14, 2026.
