Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has been ordered by the Calcutta High Court to pay Rs 4 lakh (four hundred thousand rupees) per month in alimony to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and their minor daughter. The ruling, issued on Tuesday by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, allocates Rs 1.5 lakh for Jahan's personal maintenance and Rs 2.5 lakh for their daughter's care and expenses.
This decision follows an appeal by Jahan against a 2018 order from the Alipore Court in Kolkata, which had set the monthly alimony at a significantly lower sum of Rs 50,000 for Jahan and Rs 80,000 for their daughter. Jahan had initially sought a total of Rs 10 lakh per month.
During the appeal, Jahan’s legal team highlighted Shami's substantial income, citing his 2021 income tax return which showed an annual income of approximately Rs 7.19 crore (seven hundred nineteen million rupees), or around Rs 60 lakh per month. Jahan claimed her monthly expenses, including her daughter's, exceeded Rs 6 lakh. The High Court considered Shami’s significant earnings and the fact that Jahan has not remarried, stating the revised amount was "just, fair and reasonable" to ensure their financial stability.
Shami and Jahan married in 2014 and had a daughter in 2015, but their relationship became contentious in 2018 when Jahan accused him of domestic violence and other issues. Shami is currently recovering from an injury and missed recent cricket series.
