Sonam Wangchuk Shifted to Hospital as Hunger Strike Enters 21st Day

Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday after his indefinite hunger strike entered its 21st day, with Delhi Police citing deteriorating health and compliance with Delhi High Court directions. The move triggered fresh protests at Jantar Mantar, where organisers accused the police of forcibly removing the activist.

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) alleged that police cracked down on protesters and forcibly removed Wangchuk from the protest site. However, Delhi Police maintained that he was shifted to the hospital on the advice of medical experts after his health worsened. Before being taken away, Wangchuk said he had already lost nearly 20 per cent of his body weight but remained determined to continue the agitation. He also urged supporters to join the proposed "Chalo Sansad" march on July 20, saying the success of the movement depends on public participation.

Health concerns have also deepened for three AISA activists—Neha, Aameen and Manish—who have completed 20 days of their hunger strike. Doctors have recommended immediate hospitalisation for Neha after her blood sugar dropped to a critical level, while Aameen is suffering from dangerously high uric acid levels and Manish has lost over 10 kg. The protest has received support from several opposition leaders.

As Wangchuk's health continues to deteriorate and the protest gains political momentum, pressure is mounting on the Centre to engage with the demonstrators and address their demands over alleged examination irregularities.
