Desk Correspondent, Bhopal - The Madhya Pradesh government has officially constituted a six-member committee to evaluate the feasibility and implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. According to a notification issued by the Home Department, the panel will be headed by a retired Supreme Court judge and is tasked with examining personal laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance, and succession across different communities. The committee’s primary objective is to draft a report recommending a common set of civil laws that would apply to all citizens of the state regardless of their religion.
The formation of the panel follows several public statements by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who has advocated for the UCC as a means to ensure social justice and gender equality. The committee includes legal experts, social workers, and administrative officials who will consult with various stakeholders and study existing legal frameworks. This move positions Madhya Pradesh as one of several BJP-led states, including Uttarakhand and Gujarat, that are actively pursuing the implementation of a unified legal code for personal matters.
Politically, the decision has sparked a significant debate between the ruling administration and opposition leaders. While proponents argue that the UCC will modernize the legal system and protect the rights of women within all religious groups, critics express concerns regarding the potential impact on tribal customs and religious freedom. The committee is expected to submit its comprehensive findings and recommendations to the state government within a specified timeframe, which will then determine the legislative roadmap for the proposed code.
