Desk Correspondent , Lucknow - Six members of a family were killed and four others critically injured on Monday morning when their car veered out of control and collided with another vehicle on the Kalpi-Orai stretch in Uttar Pradesh’s Jalaun district. The tragic incident occurred around 7am near the Jolhupur turn in Kalpi, as the overloaded car carrying ten passengers, all from the same family, was returning from a pilgrimage to Ayodhya. Police and district officials confirmed that four victims died at the scene, while two succumbed to injuries during treatment at a local hospital. The impact was so severe that rescue teams took nearly an hour to extract the trapped passengers from the mangled wreckage.
The car, reportedly driven by a family member, lost control after the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel. It then struck a moving vehicle ahead, leading to the devastating crash. All ten occupants hailed from Mahrauni in Lalitpur district. District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar Pandey stated that while the names of all travelers have been obtained, full identification of the deceased is pending confirmation by arriving family members. The survivors are undergoing treatment, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Preliminary investigations point to fatigue as a primary cause, with no immediate reports of mechanical failure or rash driving by the other vehicle.
This accident highlights the persistent risks of long-distance road travel in Uttar Pradesh, especially during pilgrim returns when vehicles are often overcrowded. Authorities have initiated a case and are examining the exact sequence of events. Local police urged drivers to take adequate rest during extended journeys. The incident has sent shockwaves through the victims' village, with community members mourning the loss while demanding stricter enforcement of road safety norms to prevent such family tragedies. Similar crashes in the region underscore the need for better highway infrastructure and awareness campaigns against drowsy driving.
