New Delhi, August 17 — Astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently participated in the Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station, returned to India on Sunday morning to an enthusiastic reception. His arrival was marked by celebrations that reflected both national pride and recognition of his achievement.
Shukla landed at Indira Gandhi International Airport, where he was received by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan. Officials described his return as a moment of pride for the country, highlighting India’s growing presence in space exploration.
Ahead of his arrival, Shukla shared an emotional post on social media, stating that he was experiencing “a mix of emotions” while preparing to leave his fellow astronauts and return to his homeland. He expressed gratitude to the nation for the overwhelming support he received throughout his journey.
Following his return, Shukla is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and participate in the upcoming National Space Day celebrations. His successful mission has been viewed as a stepping stone toward India’s future human spaceflight programme, including the much-anticipated Gaganyaan project.
The homecoming of Shukla, only the second Indian astronaut to travel to space, has not only inspired pride but also reinforced India’s ambitions to expand its role in international space missions. His journey, officials noted, will serve as motivation for future generations of Indian scientists and explorers.
