Desk Correspondent , Mumbai - The BCCI is reportedly planning a major overhaul of India’s white-ball leadership, with a move towards appointing a single captain for both ODIs and T20Is. According to sources, Shreyas Iyer has emerged as the top contender for the role following his consistent performances and leadership credentials.

The shift comes in the wake of the IPL 2026 season, with the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, keen to reward Iyer’s form by bringing him back into the T20I setup. The board is understood to be impressed with his recent white-ball performances and his leadership in the IPL, placing him firmly at the top of their captaincy wishlist. Sources indicate that the BCCI is looking to move away from split captaincy and instead have one leader guiding both limited-overs formats. This could see Iyer not only returning to the T20I side but also taking over leadership duties across formats. The development also comes amid a dip in form for current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav, although the board is expected to acknowledge his past contributions, including his role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph. 

At the same time, Shubman Gill, who was appointed ODI captain after Rohit Sharma, could see his position reassessed as the management explores a unified leadership approach. The board is also aiming to strike a balance between youth and experience, with potential changes expected in the upcoming T20I squad. Earlier reports had even suggested the possibility of maintaining separate T20I teams, highlighting the broader transition phase Indian cricket is currently undergoing.

With India shifting focus towards ODIs ahead of the next 50-over World Cup and a packed white-ball calendar lined up, the upcoming squad announcements will be crucial in shaping the team’s leadership future.
