Sheikh Hasina Condoles Rival Khaleda Zia’s Death

Desk Correspondent , Dhaka - In a rare moment of political bridge-building, exiled former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her deepest condolences following the death of her long-time rival, Begum Khaleda Zia. Hasina, who is currently seeking refuge in India, described the passing of the 80-year-old BNP chairperson as a "profound loss" for the political landscape of Bangladesh. Despite their decades-long "Battle of the Begums," Hasina’s message struck a somber and respectful tone, acknowledging Zia’s pivotal role in the nation's history.

In a statement shared by the Awami League, Hasina praised Khaleda Zia for her significant contributions, particularly as the country's first female Prime Minister. "As the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and for her role in the struggle to establish democracy, her contributions to the nation were significant and will be remembered," the message read. Hasina also offered prayers for the "eternal peace and forgiveness" of Zia’s soul and conveyed her sincere sympathies to the bereaved family, specifically mentioning Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman.

The news of the condolences has surprised many, given the intense and often bitter rivalry that has defined Bangladeshi politics for over thirty years. Khaleda Zia passed away early on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, after a prolonged battle with multiple health issues, including liver cirrhosis and heart complications. A political analyst remarked, "Hasina’s statement is a significant diplomatic gesture that recognizes the end of an era in which these two women were the primary architects of the country’s political destiny." As Bangladesh enters a period of state mourning, this moment of unity serves as a reflection on the shared, albeit contentious, history of its most powerful leaders.
