Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has welcomed the appointment of Sergio Gor as the new United States Ambassador to India, remarking it is "good" that the long-vacant position is finally being filled. Tharoor’s comments came after Indian-origin venture capitalist Asha Jadeja Motwani praised Gor’s nomination, noting it was a major development for India-US relations.
Motwani described Gor as a key figure in US President Donald Trump’s inner circle, suggesting his appointment would provide India with direct access to the highest levels of the US administration. She anticipated "faster communication with Washington" and increased interest from American tech firms in the Indian market. Tharoor echoed this sentiment, hoping for "a somewhat more stable set of interlocutors" if the Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia is also confirmed soon.
Sergio Gor, 38, served as White House personnel director and played a significant role in Trump’s 2024 election campaign. President Trump confirmed Gor’s nomination, stating he would also serve as Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. Trump highlighted the importance of having someone he could "fully trust to deliver on my agenda" for the world's most populous region. The ambassadorial post has been vacant since January, and Gor’s appointment now awaits confirmation by the US Senate.
