In a notable decision just ahead of Diwali, the Supreme Court has approved the sale and bursting of green firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR region from October 18 to 21.

These eco-friendlier crackers are designed to produce lower emissions and less noise than traditional fireworks. The court’s order aims to strike a balance between cultural celebrations and environmental concerns. While strict restrictions on conventional firecrackers have long been in place to curb pollution, this interim nod allows the use of only those that comply with established “green” standards.

The directive comes amid ongoing debates over air quality during festive seasons, especially in Delhi, where smog levels often spike post-Diwali. The court’s approval doesn’t extend to all firecrackers — only certified green ones.  Observers say effective enforcement and monitoring will be essential to prevent misuse of the ruling and protect public health.
