The Supreme Court on Monday said it would not take cognisance of a chargesheet filed against an Ashoka University professor in connection with social media posts related to Operation Sindoor.
The professor had earlier been booked under provisions of the law following remarks made online about the military operation. The chargesheet, which was filed by the investigating agency, was brought to the attention of the court.
A bench of the apex court noted that the filing of a chargesheet does not automatically mean that the court should intervene at this stage. It observed that the trial court is the proper forum to consider the matter further.
The case has sparked debate around the limits of free expression, particularly when academic voices engage with sensitive issues such as national security and military operations.
While the professor has defended the posts as part of academic freedom and personal opinion, critics argue that comments on ongoing military actions can have wider implications. The matter is expected to continue in the lower court, where the professor will have the opportunity to contest the charges.
