Sarvesh Kushare Wins Historic CWG Silver

Ananya Lohia , New Delhi - India's Sarvesh Kushare scripted history by becoming the country's first-ever silver medallist in the men's high jump at the Commonwealth Games. The 31-year-old cleared 2.25m in Glasgow, finishing behind Jamaica's Romaine Beckford on countback after both athletes achieved the same height.

Kushare produced a composed performance, clearing 2.05m, 2.10m, 2.15m and 2.20m on his first attempts. He overcame a tense moment at 2.25m, clearing the bar on his third and final attempt to secure the silver medal. Beckford claimed gold after clearing the same height on his first attempt, while England's Kimani Jack took bronze with 2.20m. The silver medal marks another milestone in Kushare's inspiring journey from a small village in Maharashtra's Nashik district.

Trained initially with a homemade landing pit made from agricultural waste, he has steadily risen through the ranks, becoming India's first men's Olympic high jumper, the first Indian to reach a World Championships final, and the national record holder with a personal best of 2.31m.

Kushare's Commonwealth Games silver is India's best-ever result in the men's high jump, surpassing Tejaswin Shankar's bronze from Birmingham 2022. His latest achievement further establishes him as one of India's greatest high jumpers and highlights an extraordinary rise built on determination and perseverance.
