During the Asia Cup match between India and Pakistan in Dubai, Pakistani cricketer Sahibzada Farhan set off a political storm by mimicking the shape of an AK-47 with his bat upon scoring his half-century. Many viewers saw this gesture as inappropriate amid sensitive India-Pakistan tensions. Another controversial move came from fast bowler Haris Rauf. In the second innings, after jeers from the crowd, he made a “0-6” hand gesture and also mimicked a fighter-jet—which many interpreted as references to recent military clashes, especially “Operation Sindoor.” 

The gestures didn’t just stay on the field—they quickly spilled into politics. Several opposition leaders questioned whether it was right for India to play Pakistan at all under these circumstances. Some said that sporting events should remain free of political provocation.  Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, for example, criticized Farhan’s act as being deeply insensitive toward tragedies like the Pahalgam killings.  Political figures from other parties echoed the view that such gestures humiliate the nation and questioned whether Pakistan should have been given the platform to perform those acts. 

While India won the match by six wickets, the controversy has overshadowed the sporting result for many. The incident renewed calls for stricter norms around player behaviour, and whether matches between countries with strained relations should be allowed under certain “gesture guidelines.”
