Russian Drones and Missiles Claim Five Lives at Ukraine's Naftogaz Gas Plants

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - In a brazen escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russian drones and missiles struck critical gas production facilities owned by Ukraine's state giant Naftogaz in the Poltava and Kharkiv regions overnight, claiming the lives of five people—including two rescue workers—and disrupting gas supplies for nearly 3,500 households, as confirmed by Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretskyi.

Russia unleashed a massive barrage comprising 11 ballistic missiles and more than 150 drones starting late Monday evening, prompting Ukraine's air force to mount a fierce defense that successfully intercepted one missile and 149 drones; however, eight missiles and 14 drones evaded defenses to strike targets across 14 locations nationwide, with the Naftogaz sites in Poltava suffering direct impacts and collateral debris damage that ignited fires and forced immediate shutdowns. Poltava regional governor Vitalii Diakivnych detailed how the strikes crippled two key production sites, leading to emergency outages that left thousands without heating and power, while Naftogaz repair crews working in tandem with the State Emergency Service face ongoing threats from follow-up drone incursions as they battle blazes and assess structural damage to restore flows.

Naftogaz CEO Serhiy Koretskyi emphasized that these facilities, located in gas-rich northeastern regions like Poltava, Kharkiv, and previously Sumy, hold zero military significance and serve purely civilian purposes, labeling the repeated hits part of a pattern seen in earlier assaults on Ukrnafta and other energy assets as calculated efforts to terrorize populations, sow panic, and erode Ukraine's energy independence ahead of seasonal demands. This incident echoes prior devastating strikes, such as those in October 2025 that damaged gas facilities and killed workers, and March 2026 attacks in Poltava and Sumy regions, where Russia has systematically targeted the energy grid to amplify humanitarian crises, disrupt daily life, and pressure Kyiv amid stalled peace talks. Ukraine's responses include bolstering air defenses and retaliatory operations against Russian assets, but the persistent vulnerabilities expose the sector's fragility, with production halts now threatening broader economic ripple effects in the war torn nation.

As Naftogaz teams heroically strive to rebuild under fire, this deadly assault on Ukraine's energy lifeline demands urgent global action including accelerated delivery of advanced air defense systems, stronger sanctions on Russian aggressors, and renewed diplomatic pushes to shield civilian infrastructure from further wanton destruction, avert a deepening energy crisis, and pave the way for lasting peace in a conflict that continues to exact a merciless toll on innocent lives.
