Russia Begins Shipping India’s Fourth S-400 Missile Battery; Deployment Expected by May

Desk Correspondent, New Delhi  - Russia has commenced the delivery of the fourth squadron of the S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile system to India, with full deployment expected along the country's borders by the end of May. According to officials familiar with the matter, the essential components and interceptor missiles are being transported via sea and air routes despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions and logistical challenges stemming from the conflict in Ukraine. Once operational, this advanced air defense system will significantly bolster India’s aerospace security, providing a long-range shield against aerial threats including fighter jets, missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The delivery marks a critical milestone in the $5.43 billion deal signed between New Delhi and Moscow in October 2018 for five S-400 squadrons. While the first three units have already been stationed to cover sectors along the borders with China and Pakistan, the fourth unit’s arrival was previously delayed due to the war in Europe and complexities regarding the international payment system. To circumvent sanctions and banking hurdles, India and Russia have reportedly utilized a rupee-ruble exchange mechanism to ensure the continuation of high-value defense supplies.

This latest development underscores the enduring strategic partnership between India and Russia, even as New Delhi faces pressure from Western nations to diversify its defense procurement. The S-400 is considered one of the world’s most sophisticated air defense systems, capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously at ranges of up to 400 kilometers. The final and fifth squadron of the system is tentatively scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026 or early 2027, completing India's planned integrated air defense umbrella.
