Mumbai has seen an increase in respiratory infections among children in recent weeks, with paediatricians warning parents to stay vigilant. According to Dr. Anjali Mehta, a leading paediatrician in the city, children under five, especially those with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma or weakened immunity, are the most vulnerable.
“Toddlers and young children have developing immune systems, making them more susceptible to infections like the common cold, flu, and in some cases, pneumonia,” Dr. Mehta explained. She noted that seasonal changes and crowded urban settings in Mumbai can increase exposure to viruses and bacteria.
Parents are advised to take preventive measures to protect their children. Simple steps such as regular handwashing, avoiding crowded places when possible, ensuring adequate sleep, and maintaining a balanced diet can help strengthen immunity. Dr. Mehta also recommends timely vaccination, including the flu vaccine, and seeking prompt medical attention if a child shows persistent fever, difficulty breathing, or severe cough.
Schools and daycare centers are being urged to follow strict hygiene protocols, including regular cleaning and encouraging sick children to stay home to prevent the spread of infections.
“Awareness and early action are key. With proper precautions, most respiratory infections in children can be managed effectively at home,” Dr. Mehta said.
