Red Alert as Heavy Rains Bring Mumbai to a Standstill

Ananya Lohia , Mumbai - Relentless monsoon rains have thrown normal life out of gear across Mumbai, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall. Widespread waterlogging, landslides and transport disruptions have affected thousands of commuters, prompting authorities to advise residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

A major landslide near Tunnel No. 40 between Thakurwadi and Monkey Hill disrupted the busy Mumbai–Pune rail corridor, forcing the cancellation, diversion and regulation of several long-distance trains. Local train services between Karjat and Khopoli were suspended after rainwater damaged the tracks, while trains on the Churchgate–Dahanu Road route operated with delays. Services on the Vasai–Virar route also remained limited due to severe waterlogging.

Heavy rain also disrupted road and air travel. Traffic on the Pune–Mumbai Expressway and the old Mumbai–Pune highway was temporarily halted because of flooding and a landslide before being restored. At least 13 people lost their lives in rain-related incidents across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Schools, colleges and the University of Mumbai remained closed, 22 trains were cancelled, several flights were delayed, and private companies were advised to allow employees to work from home.

With more heavy rainfall expected over the next 24 hours, authorities have stepped up emergency measures across the city. Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flooded areas and unsafe structures, and follow official advisories until the weather improves.
