Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), closing a chapter that spanned over 14 years. The 37-year-old confirmed the decision on social media, calling it a “special day” and stating that while his IPL journey ends, his career will now continue in overseas T20 leagues.
Ashwin made his IPL debut in 2009 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and went on to play for Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals. He later returned to CSK, where he concluded his stint. Over the course of 221 matches, he picked up 187 wickets, placing him among the league’s most consistent bowlers. His performances included key spells in CSK’s title-winning campaigns and several match-winning breakthroughs.
Apart from his bowling, Ashwin was known for his innovative approach, particularly with variations in spin and strategic use of the carrom ball. His leadership experience, including a captaincy stint with Punjab Kings, added another layer to his IPL career.
The announcement comes months after Ashwin stepped away from international cricket in 2024. By choosing to move towards global franchise opportunities, he joins a list of senior Indian players exploring playing careers abroad once their IPL commitments conclude.
Cricket observers believe Ashwin’s expertise and tactical mind will make him a highly sought-after player and mentor in international leagues. While his IPL journey has ended, his influence on T20 cricket is set to continue on a global stage.
