Rajya Sabha Row Over Aishe Ghosh Arrest

Ananya Lohia  , New Delhi - A political storm erupted in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday after Delhi Police entered the CPI(M) headquarters, AKG Bhavan, to arrest former JNUSU president and student activist Aishe Ghosh. The Opposition called it an assault on democracy, while the Centre defended it as a routine law-and-order action.

Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticised the police action, asking how officials could enter the office of a national political party and demanding strict action against those responsible. CPI(M) MP John Brittas alleged that police personnel, some reportedly in plain clothes, entered the party office to arrest Ghosh, claiming the move was linked to her participation in recent protests and intended to create fear among student activists.

Defending the police, Union Minister JP Nadda said the team was only carrying out a non-bailable warrant related to a 2021 protest. Rejecting the Opposition's allegations, he said such action was part of the normal legal process and recalled that he himself had been arrested several times during the Emergency as a student activist.

The issue led to heated exchanges in the Rajya Sabha, with the Opposition demanding an explanation from the Union Home Ministry, while the government maintained that the police acted strictly in accordance with the law.
