Desk Correspondent , New Delhi - Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ Meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on April 28, 2026. The bilateral interaction focused on maintaining peace and tranquillity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and reviewing the overall situation there, amid ongoing efforts to stabilise strained ties following the 2020 border standoff. Singh, who arrived in the Kyrgyz capital a day earlier, also engaged with other counterparts, including Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, as part of India's broader push for regional defence cooperation within the SCO framework.
The discussions between the two ministers extended to broader regional security issues, including the evolving situation in West Asia. Sources indicated that both sides emphasised the importance of strengthening military communication channels to prevent misunderstandings and build trust. Singh took to social media to describe the meeting positively, stating it was “a pleasure to interact with the Defence Minister of China Admiral Dong Jun during the SCO Defence Ministers' Meeting in Bishkek.” This engagement comes at a time when India and China are working to repair bilateral relations through sustained diplomatic and military dialogues, even as they navigate complex geopolitical challenges in the SCO and beyond. No specific agreements were announced immediately after the talks, but the meeting underscored the continued relevance of high-level defence contacts.
The SCO Defence Ministers’ conclave provided a vital multilateral platform for member states to deliberate on counter-terrorism, regional stability, and defence collaboration. Singh’s participation highlighted India’s commitment to addressing shared security concerns while advancing its strategic interests in Central Asia. Analysts view the Rajnath Singh-Dong Jun meeting as a significant step in de-escalating border tensions and fostering predictability along the LAC. With both nations being key SCO players, such interactions are expected to contribute to overall peace and cooperation in the region, even as global hotspots like West Asia demand coordinated responses. The development reflects a pragmatic approach in India-China ties, balancing competition with dialogue on mutual concerns.
