Rajinikanth's action thriller, 'Coolie', directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is nearing the Rs 500 crore (£50 million) milestone in global box office collections. After 12 days, the film's worldwide gross stands at Rs 484 crore according to one source, while another states Rs 479 crore. This achievement places 'Coolie' as the fourth-highest-grossing Tamil film ever, surpassing Mani Ratnam's 'Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1'.
Within India, 'Coolie' earned Rs 256.75 crore net (Rs 304 crore gross) by the end of its second weekend. However, Day 12 saw a significant slowdown, with domestic nett collections dipping to just Rs 0.53 crore or Rs 2.52 crore. Its overseas earnings have reached over $22 million (Rs 180 crore).
Despite its success, 'Coolie's' recent performance is considered poorer compared to the top three Tamil films like Rajinikanth's '2.0' and 'Jailer', and Vijay's 'Leo' which registered higher second Monday collections. The film features Rajinikanth investigating his friend's death, with a cast including Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, and Aamir Khan in a special appearance.
