Desk Correspondent , Bengaluru - On March 26 at the university’s Electronic City campus an incident occurred. In front of around 60 students Dr. Muralidhar Deshpande, an adjunct professor at PES University, allegedly called a Muslim student “terrorist” at least 13 times and using derogatory, religion-targeted language during a lecture. A video of the confrontation went viral on social media, prompting the police action on Saturday under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 299 and 352. A suo motu case has been registered agains the professor and he has been suspended pending inquiry. He is expected to be questioned soon. No formal complaint was filed initially, but police are collecting evidence.
The disagreement reportedly arose during the class when the professor referenced international conflicts and political figures while targeting the student, identified as Affan. According to the viral video and student accounts, Deshpande made remarks such as “Iran war happened because of people like you,” “Trump will take you away,” and other abusive comments, creating a hostile environment. Some students who objected or supported the victim were allegedly suspended on grounds of talking in class. The University’ Vice-Chancellor has ordered a thorough investigation following the backlash.
The incident has created outrage on social media over communal remarks in educational institutions and concerns regarding campus enviornment. Inspector Satheesh Kumar of Bengaluru Police, has confirmed the case was registered and the investigation is onging. The university assured to take strict action based on the results. This incident has highlighted the need for sensitivity in academic settings amid rising tensions around religious and political discourse.
