Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on shopkeepers across the country to put up boards promoting swadeshi products as part of his push for local goods. The appeal comes at a time when India faces the prospect of fresh tariffs from the United States, raising concerns about the impact on trade and imports.
Speaking at an event, Modi said that highlighting Indian-made products would not only boost local industries but also strengthen the economy in the face of global challenges. He urged citizens to prioritise homegrown goods over foreign alternatives, describing it as a way to build self-reliance.
The government has been promoting the “vocal for local” campaign for several years, encouraging consumers to choose Indian brands in sectors ranging from textiles and electronics to agriculture and manufacturing.
Traders’ associations have welcomed the appeal, saying it would help small businesses and artisans gain visibility. However, some economists have cautioned that while symbolic, such measures need to be backed by structural reforms and incentives to ensure sustainable growth.
With US tariffs looming, the government is expected to step up its efforts to shield domestic industries and reduce dependence on imports, making swadeshi promotion a central theme in its economic strategy.
