Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reacted to the recent decision by former US President Donald Trump to impose a 50% tariff on certain Indian goods, asserting that India will firmly safeguard the interests of its agricultural community.
In a public statement, PM Modi emphasised that farmers, livestock keepers, and fishermen remain top priorities for the government. He warned that any external policy threatening these sectors would face strong opposition from India. “Any policy that threatens their interests will be firmly opposed. India will never compromise when it comes to protecting the interests of our farmers,” he said.
The remarks came in the wake of Washington’s tariff move, which could impact key Indian exports. Trade experts note that such measures often trigger retaliatory actions, potentially affecting bilateral trade relations between the two countries. While no immediate countermeasure has been announced by New Delhi, officials have indicated that discussions are underway to assess the economic implications.
India and the United States have historically shared strong trade ties, with agricultural products forming an important part of their exchange. However, tariff disputes have occasionally strained relations. PM Modi’s statement underlines the government’s stance of prioritising domestic producers while seeking to maintain balanced foreign relations.
The development is expected to be a significant topic in upcoming trade negotiations, with stakeholders from both nations closely monitoring the outcome.
