Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on October 8, marking a major milestone in India’s aviation sector. The airport, set to begin commercial operations in December, will make Mumbai one of the few cities in the world with two international airports. Developed under a public–private partnership between Adani Airport Holdings and CIDCO, the project cost around ₹19,650 crore and is expected to generate over 2 lakh jobs across multiple sectors.

The Navi Mumbai airport is India’s first fully digital airport, equipped with advanced technologies like  digital immigration, online baggage tracking, and pre-booked parking facilities. In its first phase, it will handle 20 million passengers annually through a single terminal and runway. Once fully expanded, it will have four terminals, two runways, and a total capacity to handle 155 million passengers per year.

Airlines such as IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air have already expressed interest in starting operations from NMIA. Initially, the airport will operate 12 hours a day, with about 40% international traffic, increasing to 75% over time
