PM Modi flags off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Haryana’s Jind

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated India’s first hydrogen‑powered passenger train from Jind in Haryana, marking a significant milestone in the country’s shift toward cleaner rail transport. The launch places India among a select group of nations experimenting with hydrogen fuel‑cell technology for trains.

The new service, designed as a pilot project, is planned to run between Jind and Sonipat on a non‑electrified route, demonstrating how hydrogen can replace diesel traction. The train uses onboard fuel cells that combine hydrogen with oxygen to generate electricity, with water vapour as the only exhaust, eliminating tailpipe carbon emissions and aligning with India’s broader push for green mobility. Built with substantial domestic engineering input and equipped with multiple coaches and a high‑capacity propulsion system, it serves as both a showcase of indigenous capability and a testbed for future zero‑emission rail services.

The flag‑off at Jind is part of a wider programme of infrastructure launches and foundation‑stone ceremonies in Haryana and neighbouring states, signalling that transport modernisation and decarbonisation are being pursued together. Officials have indicated that, if the train meets performance and safety expectations on the Jind–Sonipat corridor, similar hydrogen‑powered services could gradually be introduced on other routes, supporting national climate goals and reducing reliance on fossil fuels in the railway sector.

The launch of the hydrogen‑powered train from Jind represents both a technological step forward and a clear commitment to cleaner mobility. If the pilot proves successful and is expanded, hydrogen trains could become an important tool in cutting rail emissions while highlighting India’s capacity to deploy next‑generation transport systems.
