Ananya Lohia , Delhi - Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off India's first hydrogen-powered passenger train in Haryana's Jind, marking a major milestone in the country's push towards clean, sustainable and indigenous railway technology.

Designed, engineered and integrated using indigenous technology, the 10-coach train is among the world's longest and most powerful hydrogen-powered passenger trains. Equipped with a 3,200-horsepower propulsion system, the broad-gauge train reflects the success of the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. During the launch, the Prime Minister said hydrogen train technology is currently available in only a handful of countries, adding that India's achievement is a matter of national pride.

Powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology, the train produces only water vapour as a by-product, resulting in zero carbon emissions. It also reduces dependence on fossil fuels, operates with lower noise levels and does not require continuous overhead electrification. The train will run on the 89-km Jind–Sonipat route, completing the journey in around two hours with 12 intermediate stops.

The launch of India's first hydrogen-powered train marks a significant step towards greener rail transport, reinforcing the country's commitment to innovation, self-reliance and environmentally sustainable mobility.
