PM-Led Panel to Meet on May 12 to Select New CBI Director, Extension for Praveen Sood Possible

Desk Correspondent , New Delhi – A high-powered selection committee, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is scheduled to convene on May 12 to deliberate on the appointment of the next Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The crucial meeting, which includes the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha as statutory members, will evaluate a shortlist of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from various cadres. While the primary agenda is to find a successor, sources indicate that a significant point of discussion will be the potential extension of the tenure of the incumbent Director, Praveen Sood. This move comes at a sensitive time for the premier investigative agency, as several high-profile corruption cases and inter-state probes are currently reaching critical stages of litigation and inquiry.

The selection process is governed by the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act, which mandates a transparent vetting procedure based on seniority, integrity, and experience in anti-corruption investigations. Currently, the names of several 1989 and 1990 batch IPS officers are being circulated as frontrunners for the prestigious post. However, the government is reportedly weighing the benefits of continuity within the agency’s leadership. Praveen Sood, a 1986-batch officer and former Director General of Police for Karnataka, took charge in May 2023 for a fixed two-year term. Under recent legislative amendments, the government possesses the legal authority to grant annual extensions to the CBI chief for up to five years in total, provided such extensions are justified by public interest and recommended by the high-level committee.

The outcome of the May 12 meeting is expected to have far-reaching implications for the autonomy and operational efficiency of the CBI. Opposition members of the panel have historically emphasized the need for a non-partisan appointment to maintain the agency’s credibility, while the government maintains that stability is essential for concluding long-term international investigations. If an extension for Sood is not finalized, the committee will have to expedite the clearance of a new candidate to ensure a seamless transition of power. As the deadline approaches, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Department of Personnel and Training are finalizing the dossiers of the eligible candidates, ensuring that the selection adheres to the strict guidelines previously laid down by the Supreme Court of India regarding the tenure of police chiefs.
