Ranit Kr. Singh , Kolkata - A drugstore owner was arrested on Monday after allegedly dispensing the wrong medication to a four-month-pregnant woman, resulting in a miscarriage at Nilganj Bazar in the Amdanga police station area. The accused, identified as Byomkesh Biswas, reportedly misread a doctor's prescription and substituted the prescribed 'Miprogen SK 200' with 'Mistel SK 200'. Within two days of consuming the incorrect medicine, the victim, Jhuma Roy, suffered severe bleeding and physical deterioration, leading to the loss of her pregnancy.
The incident triggered widespread fury among local residents and the victim's family, who gathered in groups to attack and vandalize the pharmacy. To restore order, a large contingent from the Amdanga police station alongside central forces rushed to the spot and brought the volatile situation under control. Following a formal written complaint filed by the aggrieved family, the police arrested Biswas from his shop, and he is currently undergoing rigorous interrogation regarding the pharmaceutical negligence.
The victim, a resident of the Khader Math area in Nilganj, expressed immense grief over the tragedy, noting that she had conceived after years of medical struggle. Amdanga police confirmed that a comprehensive investigation has been initiated into the matter to determine how the critical oversight occurred. Meanwhile, security personnel remain deployed in the Nilganj Bazar area to prevent any further flare-ups or retaliatory violence.
