The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that the ongoing spell of heavy rainfall is expected to persist into September, with no immediate respite for flood-hit regions.
Officials said the active monsoon phase has already brought widespread disruption in northern and central India, leading to swollen rivers, landslides, and damage to infrastructure. The rainfall so far has been recorded at above-normal levels, making this one of the wettest monsoon seasons in recent years.
States including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of Uttarakhand remain on high alert. Several districts have reported severe waterlogging, blocked highways, and disruptions to rail and road connectivity. In hilly areas, the continuous downpour has triggered multiple landslides, hampering relief and rescue operations.
The IMD noted that while some areas may experience short breaks in rainfall, these are likely to be followed by renewed heavy showers. This cycle, experts warn, will prolong risks of flooding and strain ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
Disaster management teams are coordinating with state governments to step up precautionary measures. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable zones to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel.
With September expected to bring continued heavy rainfall, officials emphasise the importance of preparedness. Relief agencies are reinforcing shelters, stockpiling essential supplies, and monitoring river basins to prevent large-scale damage.
The IMD will issue daily updates as conditions develop, but it has made clear that monsoon activity remains far from over.
