Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has sparked a fresh debate with his recent remarks on politics and leadership, stating, "One who can fool the people is the best leader" (Jo logon ko sabse acchha moorkh bana sakta hai, wahi sabse acchha neta ho sakta hai). The comments were made during an event in Nagpur on September 1, 2025.
Gadkari elaborated that while talking is easy and doing is difficult, he experiences how "telling the truth wholeheartedly is discouraged" in his field. He cited a Marathi saying, "Haose, navse, gavse", suggesting people have diverse motives, and ultimately, a leader who can convince by fooling often succeeds.
Despite these contentious statements, Gadkari stressed the importance of honesty, credibility, dedication, and truth in society. He referenced the Bhagavad Gita, stating that truth is the ultimate victor, and cautioned against shortcuts, noting a philosopher's quote: "shortcuts cut you short". Earlier in his address, Gadkari had also urged people to live with honesty and dedication. These remarks have generated significant discussion.
