Desk Correspondent , Delhi - New Delhi has strongly dismissed a claim by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that Beijing mediated to reduce tensions between India and Pakistan following the intense military conflict in May 2025. People familiar with the matter in the Indian capital described the remark as "bizarre," clarifying that China played no role in the cessation of hostilities. Indian officials reiterated that the conflict, which erupted after the Pahalgam terror attack in April, was resolved through direct communication between the military officials of the two neighboring nations, specifically the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs).

The controversy began when Wang Yi, speaking at a symposium in Beijing, listed the India-Pakistan standoff among several global hotspots where China supposedly "mediated" this year. This claim mirrors previous assertions made by US President Donald Trump, which India has consistently rejected. Indian sources noted that New Delhi has a long-standing policy of not accepting third-party mediation in its bilateral issues with Pakistan. Some observers in the Indian foreign policy establishment suggested that China might be attempting to mimic the US's diplomatic posturing to project itself as a global peacemaker.

The brief but intense military conflict in May 2025 involved Indian precision strikes, dubbed Operation Sindoor, on terror infrastructure across the border in retaliation for the killing of 26 civilians in Kashmir. Interestingly, China’s role during that crisis had actually come under scrutiny for the opposite reason, with reports suggesting Beijing provided real-time surveillance and military hardware support to Islamabad. As New Delhi maintains its "no-mediation" stance, these latest claims from Beijing are being viewed more as an attempt at diplomatic grandstanding rather than a reflection of reality on the ground.
