Neurologist advises caution on self medication for stroke prevention

A 35 year old man approached a neurologist seeking a prescription for aspirin, hoping to prevent a stroke after his father suffered paralysis. The doctor, however, advised against self medication and stressed the importance of medical evaluation before starting any preventive drug.

The neurologist explained that while aspirin is commonly used to reduce the risk of clot related strokes, it is not suitable for everyone. Unsupervised use can lead to side effects such as internal bleeding, stomach ulcers, and complications in people with certain health conditions.

He further noted that stroke risk depends on multiple factors including lifestyle, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and family history. Instead of directly relying on aspirin, the doctor recommended regular health checkups, balanced diet, exercise, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol.

Medical experts often warn against taking preventive medicines without proper diagnosis, stressing that each patient requires an individual assessment. In this case, the neurologist urged the man to undergo a complete evaluation before considering any treatment.
