New figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) have once again exposed the alarming scale of dowry-related deaths across India. On average, around 20 women lose their lives every single day due to dowry harassment, according to the latest statistics.
The tragic case of Nikki Bhati, who recently died under suspicious circumstances in Greater Noida, has brought the issue back into focus. Her family has accused her in-laws of subjecting her to harassment and constant demands for dowry, allegations that are now being probed by police.
Activists and legal experts say the data reflects a disturbing social reality that persists despite decades of legal reforms. “The law against dowry has been in place for years, but weak enforcement and societal pressure often silence women,” said a women’s rights advocate.
The NCRB report shows that most of these deaths are recorded as either suicides or cases of unnatural causes within the first few years of marriage. In many instances, families allege prolonged harassment leading up to the deaths.
Public anger is growing with each new incident, as citizens and campaigners demand stronger enforcement, better protection mechanisms, and faster justice delivery. The government has reiterated that dowry-related violence will be dealt with strictly, but campaigners argue that more needs to be done on the ground to save lives.
As the investigation into Nikki Bhati’s death continues, her case has become yet another reminder of how deeply entrenched the problem of dowry violence remains in Indian society.
