Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - In a decisive move to combat tobacco related health risks, the Nagaland government has announced a one year ban on all food products containing tobacco and nicotine. The order, issued by the state's Food Safety Commissioner, prohibits the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation, and sale of products such as gutkha, pan masala containing tobacco, scented chewing tobacco, and similar items throughout the state.
The ban has been enforced under provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which empowers authorities to prohibit food products considered harmful to public health. State officials cited growing concerns over the adverse health effects of tobacco and nicotine consumption, including oral cancer, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses, and other serious medical conditions. The government emphasized that the measure is aimed at protecting citizens, particularly young people, from the harmful consequences of tobacco addiction.
Authorities have directed district administrations, law enforcement agencies, and food safety officials to strictly implement the order and take action against violators. Businesses found manufacturing, storing, transporting, or selling banned products may face legal penalties under applicable laws. The decision aligns with broader national efforts to reduce tobacco consumption and improve public health outcomes. Health experts have welcomed the move, stating that restricting the availability of tobacco-based products can help lower consumption rates and reduce long-term health burdens on society.
The one year ban reflects Nagaland's commitment to strengthening public health protections and addressing the growing challenge of tobacco related diseases. As enforcement begins across the state, officials hope the measure will encourage healthier lifestyles and contribute to a significant reduction in tobacco use among residents.
