In Kishanganj, a largely Muslim-populated district in Bihar, many residents have been making urgent efforts to gather proof of residence and other identity papers. The heightened activity comes amid growing speculation over the implementation of the National Register of Citizens in the state.
Local reports suggest that long queues have formed outside government offices as people attempt to update voter IDs, Aadhaar cards and land records. Several residents say they are unsure which documents will be considered valid, leading to confusion and anxiety.
Community leaders have been urging people to keep all records in order to avoid future complications. Social activists have also stepped in to assist those who face difficulties in accessing or correcting documents, especially among daily wage workers and rural families.
While no official notification has been issued regarding the NRC in Bihar, the uncertainty has caused many in Kishanganj to take precautionary measures. For now, the district administration has only advised citizens to ensure their personal details are accurate in all official records.
