Mumbai, August 19 — Continuous heavy rainfall has led to the closure of schools and colleges across Mumbai on Monday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that the decision was taken after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the city and surrounding districts.
The IMD reported that Mumbai recorded nearly 177 mm of rainfall within a short span of six to eight hours, while several suburbs received more than 200 mm. The intense showers caused widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas, leading to traffic jams, transport delays, and disruption of daily activities.
Several major routes, including the road to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, experienced severe congestion, forcing airlines to issue advisories to passengers. Local train services, considered the city’s lifeline, also reported delays, while flooding forced temporary closure of underpasses such as the Andheri subway.
Authorities have urged residents to remain indoors unless travel is essential. The state government is monitoring the situation closely, and emergency teams have been deployed to assist in relief operations.
The Chief Minister reviewed the situation and instructed civic bodies to step up rescue and repair measures. Officials warned that rainfall is likely to continue over the next 24–48 hours, and citizens have been advised to exercise caution.
Mumbai has witnessed recurring heavy rain this monsoon season, raising concerns over urban flooding and preparedness of civic infrastructure.
