Mumbai Indians Replaces Santner with Shardul as Concussion Sub Despite Shoulder Injury

Ananya Lohia , Mumbai - During the Mumbai Indians versus Chennai Super Kings contest in Indian Premium League on April 23, 2026, a surprising decision by Mumbai Indians has sparked debate during their latest IPL clash, as Mitchell Santner was replaced by Shardul Thakur as a concussion substitute—despite concerns over Thakur’s existing shoulder injury. The five- times champions CSK registered a compressive 103- run win on the back of Sanju Samson's unbeaten century and Akeal Hosein's four- wicket haul. But these two performance didn't gain the limelight as much as Shardul Thakur as concussion sub got. All the chatter was about Shardul Thakur and how he was allowed to bat for the Mumbai Indians despite not being in Playing XI.

The incident unfolded when Santner suffered a blow to the head while fielding, prompting immediate medical attention. Following standard concussion protocols, he was taken off the field for assessment, and the team management opted to bring in a substitute under the IPL’s concussion replacement rule. However, the decision to bring in Shardul Thakur raised eyebrows. As per regulations, a concussion substitute is expected to be a “like-for-like” replacement, meaning the incoming player should closely match the role of the injured player. While Santner is primarily a spin-bowling all-rounder, Thakur offers a different skill set as a seam-bowling all-rounder, leading to questions about whether the substitution fully aligned with the rule. Adding to the controversy was Thakur’s fitness status. The Indian all-rounder has been dealing with a shoulder issue, and his inclusion led to speculation over whether he was fully fit to take the field. Despite this, team officials confirmed that Thakur had been medically cleared to participate, even if in a limited capacity. “We requested a concussion sub. It's at the match referee and the umpires' discretion. They allowed Shardul Thakur. It is what it is. But hopefully, Santner's injury isn't too bad. Once he's back, we'll have a look at it,” said by MI head coach.

The decision by Mumbai Indians to replace Mitchell Santner with Shardul Thakur has once again brought the spotlight on concussion substitute rules in the IPL. As debates continue, the incident highlights the fine balance between player safety, team strategy, and the spirit of the game. In the game, between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, the MI won the toss and opt to bowl first, CSK on other posted the total of 207/6 in 20 overs, riding on Samson's century, and the whole bowling unit folded MI for just 104.
