Ananya Lohia , Ranchi - Former India captain MS Dhoni made a welcome return to a cricket field on Wednesday as he attended the opening ceremony of the inaugural Jharkhand T20 League in Ranchi. His appearance delighted fans after he spent the entire IPL 2026 season away from the spotlight due to injury.

A video from the event quickly went viral, showing Dhoni performing the ceremonial coin toss ahead of the tournament's opening match. It marked the first time since the inception of the IPL in 2008 that the 45-year-old had remained completely absent from the competition, having been sidelined by injury throughout the 2026 season. Dressed in a black polo shirt and sunglasses, Dhoni appeared relaxed as he interacted with players and officials before taking his seat in the stands. The crowd responded with loud cheers, highlighting the immense popularity he continues to enjoy in his home state of Jharkhand.
The league features six teams — Ranchi Titans, Jamshedpur Steelers, Chota Nagpur Royals, Koylanchal Super Kings, Dhanbad Diamonds and Santhal Strikers. A total of 27 matches, including the semi-finals and final, will be played at the JSCA International Stadium Complex over the next two weeks.
Dhoni's presence added star power and credibility to the inaugural edition of the Jharkhand T20 League. For fans, it was also a welcome opportunity to see one of India's most celebrated cricketers back around the game after an injury-enforced absence from IPL 2026.
