A heated argument broke out in the Indian Parliament recently, shifting focus from important laws to a simple cigarette. The controversy began when a Member of Parliament (MP) from the BJP party accused a member of the rival Trinamool Congress (TMC) of smoking. The lawmaker was reportedly using an e-cigarette inside the Lok Sabha, which is strictly against the rules. This complaint immediately raised a question about the dignity and proper conduct within the nation's highest legislative house.

The TMC MP, Saugata Roy, later tried to dismiss the entire issue by making a joke about air pollution. He insisted that smoking is allowed in the open area outside the Parliament building. He then questioned the government’s failure to fix the severe air quality problem in the capital. Roy argued that since the overall air in Delhi is already so polluted, "one extra cigarette" from a lawmaker would not make any difference at all.

This minor incident has quickly become a major political talking point. The TMC party suggests that the ruling BJP is only raising the issue to distract people from bigger problems, like the capital's smoggy air. With upcoming elections in West Bengal, both parties are using every chance they get to attack the other. The small act of smoking has now become a symbol of the growing political tension between these powerful national rivals.
