In the wake of a deadly cough syrup scandal, a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh is now under investigation after a woman alleged she found worms in a bottle of Azithromycin oral suspension given to her child.

The incident occurred in Morar, Gwalior district, where officials have sealed all 306 bottles of the suspected medicine and sent samples to labs in Bhopal and Kolkata for testing.  Though a preliminary check did not show visible insects in the sampled bottles, detailed analysis is underway.

Authorities confirm that the medicine was a generic antibiotic manufactured by a firm based in Madhya Pradesh.  The hospital had been distributing the doses to children for common infections.

This emergence of alleged contamination comes amid heightened scrutiny over child fatalities linked to adulterated cough syrups in MP, where 24 children died from suspected renal failure after taking toxic syrups.  The global health community, including the World Health Organization, has already issued alerts against three “substandard” syrups: Coldrif, Respifresh TR, and ReLife.
