Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia is expected to produce major strategic outcomes, including fresh momentum on defence cooperation, maritime access and port development. One of the biggest expected takeaways is an agreement to jointly develop Sabang port, which sits near the Malacca Strait and close to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
According to reports, the Sabang plan is being treated as more than an infrastructure project because of its strategic location on key sea lanes. India and Indonesia have already discussed the port through a joint task force and feasibility studies, and the latest visit is expected to push the project into a more concrete phase. Sabang’s position near the Malacca Strait gives it importance for trade, maritime connectivity and wider security coordination in the Indian Ocean.
Defence cooperation is also set to advance, with reports saying a phased BrahMos missile procurement plan is on the table and that Indonesia may also show interest in India’s Astra air-to-air missile. The visit is additionally expected to broaden cooperation on maritime security, connectivity between Aceh and the Andaman Islands, and economic engagement tied to the port. Together, these moves point to a deeper India-Indonesia partnership that combines defence, trade and strategic geography.
The trip could mark a significant step in India’s effort to build stronger partnerships across the Indo-Pacific. If Sabang moves ahead and defence deals gain traction, Modi’s Indonesia visit may end up delivering both symbolic and practical gains for New Delhi.
