Modi calls for historic Australia-India cooperation in nuclear energy and critical minerals

Swapna Kumbar , Bengaluru - Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India and Australia have “historic opportunities” to deepen cooperation in nuclear and renewable energy, critical minerals and green hydrogen. His remarks came as the two countries moved closer to a possible uranium supply arrangement and broader strategic agreements.

Modi said Australia’s technology, capital and resources could help accelerate India’s energy transition, while also pointing to long-term investment opportunities in infrastructure. Reports say India is eyeing Australian uranium to help support its target of expanding nuclear capacity, and a commercial supply deal could be finalized as part of the visit. India and Australia had already signed a civil nuclear cooperation agreement years ago, which opened the way for uranium exports for civilian use.

Critical minerals are another major part of the agenda, with both sides looking to strengthen supply chains for batteries, clean energy technologies and industrial production. The relationship has gradually broadened beyond trade into strategic and energy cooperation, reflecting shared interests in the Indo-Pacific. The latest push suggests both governments want to turn earlier framework agreements into concrete commercial outcomes.

Modi’s comments frame the Australia relationship as a major economic and strategic opportunity rather than just a diplomatic partnership. If uranium and critical-minerals talks advance, they could become some of the most significant outcomes of the current India-Australia engagement.
