Mizoram Assembly passes law to prohibit begging across the state

The Mizoram Assembly has passed a new law aimed at banning begging in the state. The legislation makes it illegal to solicit money or goods in public spaces, with penalties for those caught violating the law.

Officials stated that the move is intended to reduce visible poverty and ensure that vulnerable populations receive proper social support rather than relying on public charity. The government also plans to set up rehabilitation programs and shelters for those affected, focusing on providing education, vocational training, and employment opportunities.

Critics, however, have expressed concern that the law could criminalize poverty and disproportionately affect marginalized communities if social welfare measures are not implemented effectively. Lawmakers assured that the state will take a balanced approach, combining enforcement with support initiatives.
