Mexico Win Opener as Red Cards Steal Show

Ananya Lohia , Mexico - The 2026 FIFA World Cup got off to a dramatic start as co-hosts Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca. While the hosts secured a comfortable victory, the spotlight fell on referee Wilton Sampaio, who issued three straight red cards in a fiery contest.

Mexico made an early breakthrough when Julián Quiñones scored the first goal of the tournament in the ninth minute, converting a cross that slipped through the legs of South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The hosts doubled their advantage midway through the second half through veteran striker Raúl Jiménez, whose powerful header sealed the win. The match was overshadowed by disciplinary issues, with South Africa's Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane, along with Mexico defender César Montes, all receiving straight red cards.

Later in the day, South Korea staged a comeback to defeat Czechia 2-1 in Guadalajara. Czech captain Ladislav Krejčí opened the scoring in the 59th minute, but South Korea responded through midfielder Hwang In-beom, who equalised in the 67th minute. Hwang then turned provider, delivering a precise cross for Oh Hyeon-gyu to score the winner in the 80th minute.

Mexico's victory gave the co-hosts a perfect start to their World Cup campaign, while South Korea's spirited comeback showcased the tournament's competitive intensity. With goals, drama and three red cards on opening day, the 2026 FIFA World Cup has already delivered plenty of talking points.
