Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh – A 21-year-old woman, who is both deaf-mute and mentally challenged, was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped in Balrampur district. CCTV footage from the area shows the barefoot woman running frantically along a deserted road as two motorcycle-borne men pursued her. The clip, which has since gone viral, played a key role in identifying the accused.
Police said the woman had been returning home from her maternal uncle’s house when the men intercepted her, forced her onto a motorbike, and took her to an isolated location. She was allegedly assaulted before being abandoned.
Acting on the CCTV evidence, police launched an immediate search and arrested two suspects — identified as Ankur Verma and Harshit Pandey — after a brief encounter. Both have reportedly confessed during questioning.
The victim’s family lodged a complaint two days after the incident, leading to the registration of an FIR and the start of a detailed investigation. She is currently receiving treatment and counselling at a local hospital.
Opposition leaders have strongly criticised the state government, alleging lapses in public safety. They also claimed that some CCTV cameras in the vicinity, including near administrative buildings, were not functioning at the time of the crime.
Authorities have assured swift legal action and promised a thorough probe. The case has raised serious concerns over women’s safety in the region, especially in areas close to government offices.
The investigation remains ongoing.
