West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has criticized the sharp increase in flight fares from Bagdogra to Kolkata amid the ongoing flood crisis in North Bengal. She alleged that while airlines offered discounted fares during Bihar’s Chhath festival for election-related travel, fares in flood-hit North Bengal were raised drastically, highlighting a clear case of discrimination.
Mamata stated, “It is unfortunate that during the Chhath festival in Bihar, flights were discounted for passengers, yet in North Bengal, where people are struggling due to floods, fares have skyrocketed up to ₹18,000 for a single trip from Bagdogra to Kolkata. Is this not discrimination?” She added that some stranded passengers are forced to travel via Delhi, which increases their expenses to between ₹42,000 and ₹45,000.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the state government’s relief efforts, noting that nearly 1,000 tourists have been transported safely using 45 Volvo buses and other state-run vehicles. Relief work continues across flood-affected areas, with teams ensuring food, shelter, and medical assistance reach those in need
