Main Suspects in Osman Hadi Murder Flee to India

Desk Correspondent , Bangladesh - The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have officially claimed that the two primary suspects in the assassination of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi have fled to India. During a media briefing on Sunday, December 28, 2025, Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam identified the suspects as Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh. According to the police, the duo crossed the international border through the Haluaghat area in Mymensingh and entered the Indian state of Meghalaya shortly after the attack on December 12.

The investigation revealed that the escape was carefully coordinated with local associates on both sides of the border. Police stated that upon entering India, the suspects were received by an individual named Purti and later transported by a taxi driver named Sami to the city of Tura in Meghalaya. Dhaka police have received informal reports that Indian security agencies have already detained the individuals who assisted the fugitives, though official confirmation is still awaited. "We are maintaining communication with Indian authorities through both formal and informal channels to ensure their arrest and extradition," Nazrul Islam told reporters.

Sharif Osman Hadi, the convenor of the political platform Inqilab Mancha and a prominent face of the July 2024 uprising, was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding a rickshaw in Dhaka. He succumbed to his injuries on December 18 after being airlifted to Singapore for treatment. His death has sparked widespread unrest and anti-India protests across Bangladesh, as Hadi was a vocal critic of the former Awami League government and its ties to India. While Dhaka police are pushing for extradition, some reports indicate that Meghalaya Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) have initially dismissed the claims of a cross-border escape as part of a "false narrative."
