The Maharashtra government is reportedly reviewing a proposal to extend the daily working hours in private establishments from the current 9 hours to 10 hours. The move is being discussed as part of a broader effort to align state labor laws with evolving industry demands and improve overall productivity.
According to officials, the change would not affect the weekly cap of 48 working hours, meaning employees may work longer hours on fewer days. Supporters of the proposal argue that this could give workers more flexibility, reduce commute days, and help businesses manage operations more efficiently.
However, the proposal has also raised concerns among labor unions, who fear that extended hours may increase employee fatigue and affect work-life balance. They have urged the government to ensure proper safeguards and overtime benefits if the plan is approved.
The final decision is expected to come after consultations with industry representatives, labor unions, and other stakeholders. If implemented, the new rule could significantly impact work culture in the state’s private sector.
